Latest News at The FoodWorksSW

Activity and awareness of our facilities has continued to grow over the last few months and it's been great to watch our network of businesses develop.

Our two funded projects, FESS and CRF have both been running consecutively and are now drawing to a close. We have helped over 100 businesses with these projects and you can read about some of the highlights here. We have our last few remaining events coming up so don't miss out on the free training whilst it is still available.

We've also been lucky enough to host visits from other organisations as well as attend other events. One of these visits was a group from Northern Ireland, read more about our visits here.

The development kitchens have seen a great variety in purpose of use these last few months including menu launches, chef training, product development and scale up. Click here to read about some of the businesses we've worked with recently.

It's heating up in the kitchens

We have 5 development kitchens on site designed so that whatever your business needs, we can provide you with the facilities and equipment that you need.

A training academy have become a regular user of the kitchens - training young chefs to a high standard in a restaurant setting.

We've also seen a local brewery and restaurant chain using the kitchens to development their seasonal menus and present it to management and the rest of their team.
Another regular user of our drinks kitchen is Bruce who creates his beautifully smoked chilli sauce range, Hoots Sauce.

Using our Rationale iVario Pro and collection of thermomix's, Bruce creates up to 500 bottles of his super smooth sauce in just one day!

Over the last 18 months of Hoots being crafted in our kitchens, we have gotten very familiar with this fiery Scottish scent filling the corridors!

Funded Support Programmes

Our FESS project has seen over 50 businesses benefit from this WECA funded support programme. Food and drink producers based within Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

The scheme provided businesses with 4-5 hours of free support delivered by our team of technical experts. This has included label checks, nutritional advice, HACCP design, quality control guidance, and recipe development.

The CRF programme has seen more than 70 attendees at over  20 free seminars, advice clinics and workshops with an additional 16 supported through a dedicated support and grant scheme available to North Somerset businesses.
One business that has benefited from this scheme is The Drinks Kitchen - making delicious non-alcoholic aperitifs, Alli's business has only been trading for just over a year and is going from strength to strength.

“With my support package I’ve had access to free consultancy hours, industry-standard production spaces, business reviews, goal setting and forward planning"

One of the businesses we have helped is Delyse at Taylors of North Somerset.

Delyse describes her experiences "At FoodWorksSW I got advice on everything from vocalising my ideas, to refining my locally-sourced ingredient choices, to label design and how to develop and implement HACCP processes. When Environmental Health visited, they studied my paperwork and could see I was doing everything by the book".

Taylor's of North Somerset's jams and chutneys an now be found at more than 27 independent outlets across the region as well as local food markets.

Our most popular events have included SALSA certification advisory sessions, helping to prepare businesses for the SALSA process and Selling Through Retail.

The practical workshops have also been really popular as well with chocolate, soft drinks and pie making filling our kitchens with businesses wanting to expand their skills.

Alli has been making the most of our dairy/non-dairy processing plant which has allowed her to make such large quantities. Our dairy is equipped with a homogeniser, CIP system and cheese vat amongst some of the kit, as well as being flexible to allow other products to be made.
You can book onto our final events below,
more will be added to our website as they are released
